But only in Colombia, 21 000 special troops protect him. The Colombian democracy is well known for its death squads. The country is a Hell on hearth. But the world is silence. But is unfair to claim all on Bush. And misleading too. The US had support and installed military dictatorship, plutocracies and corrupt regimes for decenniums. They had invaded those countries for 100 years now. Talking of democracy when acting in selfish interests. Is it some sudden change in the policy? The Washington Consensus i.e. the neo-liberal cult had signified a scandalous depravation of wealth from the region during the last 25 years, also in an historical perspective. After 200 years since the countries were integrated in the global economy as independent states they are relatively pooper in spite of incredible resources. Surely there are some few people living well. But they are principally the same since the colonial era. After 500 years the indigenous population is killed in order to take their land, the blacks are slaves of poverty, the women oppressed by the church and millions emigrate from a continent that could without problem feed 10 times the actual population. The most sacred of all human rights, the right to life is violated in Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico, The world is silence or look at others direction ( usually to regimes that not follows the orders from Washington). Democracy is a bad parody and they that oppose themselves to the “order” are undemocratic (sometimes terrorists). It is under stable the fear that Chavez produce when we look closer to two of his projects: Mercosur, the free economic area between Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela and Banco del Sur, a regional development bank with founds from the region in order to break the dependency from the IMF, WB, OECD and the G11. To take foreign loans and credits has sold the economy to external forces not really interested in the improvement of the national and regional economy. It had brought the continent in a debt trap that only creates wealth in the rich countries of the North. The method used here is the perpetual credit expansion those countries had been using for the past 35 years for securing their own growth. Those two ongoing projects are necessary for stopping the shameless transfer of wealth from the region to North. There are many demagogues that mean that the situation of the continent does not depend of the MNC, the IMF or other external cause. Well, then leave the countries alone so they can arrange the economic policy they consider more suitable. The visit of Bush has to be seen in that light. He is seeking to set stop for the process of integration. The reasons are clear. But the continent has to build its economy from inside. This rich continent doesn’t need the North, despite of the extended misconception on this issue. All the serious democratic forces of the world should support this initiative.
